HOW DOES TECHNOLOGY INFLUENCE DESIGN CHANGE?

This essay will investigate how digital technology has influenced design change by discussing how graphic artists worked before the digital age and describing the work of Geogii and Vladimir Senberg, poster for The Eleventh. It will then explore how technology was much more primitive in comparison to the current innovations and consequentially, discuss the introduction of computer based design, as shown in Send Cover, 1983. The argument will then move onto the... In conclusion, the essay will undertake a visual analysis in order to demonstrate the influence of new digital innovation in graphic design, by providing insights into how the industry has adapted to the introduction of technology. The graphic design industry has been impacted significantly in the last 20 years by the introduction of computers and new technologies. While drawing skills were once beneficial to the designer, new digital media skills are in higher demand thanks to the digital revolution happened over the course of the 1980s and early 1990s, when the first digital computer and software appeared. (Hollis, R, 1994). Since then graphic design radically changed and the use of computers became as we know it, a powerful tool to create information that is used for products, web design, video games, filmmaking, photography and publishing. But how did graphic artists work before the 1980s. Designers worked with different tools such as pencils, watercolours, sketchbooks, chemicals, drawing boards, typesetting and, print production courses thought the fundamentals needed to create... Some designers combined words with images and collages to create stylistic and conceptual impact, an example is presented in Figure 1. (Geogii and Vladimir Senberg, poster for The Eleventh, 1928). The boldness and dynamism of this poster typify... It was composed by the Stonberg brothers for a film celebrating the Eleventh anniversary of the October Revolution that had brought the Bolshevisk power (Drucker and McVarish, 2013). Its areas of flat lithographic colour combine with photomontage... The photographic sources , geometric typography, and strongly organised vertical spaces are all the characteristic of the exuberance with which the Russian avant grade graphic design prompted the new social order for the Soviet Union as the... In the 19th Century, it goes without saying that technology was much more primitive in comparison to the current. Assembling of presses, which was not an easy task, was one of the skills that had to be mastered by the Printers. There was a great need to find adapting techniques to the existing types of printers to new uses. Designers in this age struggled to cope with the exponential rises in the demand for printed material. This undoubtedly required much faster speeds of production and subsequently created significant erosion on the printing surfaces. In cases where a provincial printer encountered a problem performing a particular task, the person could not simply pick a telephone to confer with some other expert in town. Consequentially, in the late 1980s computer based software replaced the typesetter. Desktop building began in 1986 with the introduction of page maker and in the 1990 the revolution for the graphic industry began with the web. (Gordon and Gordon, 2002). Before Apple sold desktop computers, digital tools were adopted by experimental artists. But the graphic capabilities offered by the new machines promoted a sense that everyone was a potential designer or artist, as shown in Figure 2. Send Cover, 1983 (Drucker and McVarish, 2013, p. 310). Scanners and point-and-click copying seemed... Personal computers were marked as empowering a broad public, putting graphic tools into their hands, along with automatic calculators and spreadsheets. When the World Wide web arrived in 1990s, communications entertainment offerings, rather than production capacity, would speed consumption of electronics. Source: CATERINA POMARI

The type that designers use can say as much to their audience as the actual words on the page. But until now, Web designers have had an extremely limited palette of typefaces from which to choose -- essentially, Arial (yawn), Times (yawn), and Georgia (yawwwwwn). Design is about overcoming the limitations of a medium, and Web design is no different. In this book, Jason shows Web designers how to apply the principles of fluid typography, Web-safe fonts, downloaded fonts, and type on images to create robust scalable designs without resorting to type in images or Adobe Flash.
