The War Department faced monumental challenges in preparing for World War II. One of those challenges was soldier morale. Recreational activities for off duty time would be important. The arts and crafts program informally evolved to augment the needs of the War Department. On January 9, 1941, the Secretary of War, Henry L. Stimson, appointed Frederick H. Osborn, a prominent U.S. businessman and philanthropist, Chairman of the War Department Committee on Education, Recreation and Community Service. My kids are obsessed with the physics game “Cut the Rope” on the iPad, which features a little green monster named Om Nom who loves candy. So, for one of their Christmas gifts, I decided to ply my (limited) sewing skills and make them their own Om Nom plush doll. This is the result. I worked mostly without a pattern (and was a bit rushed, so I don't have notes), but there are 7 panels of green terry-cloth-ish material making up the body, with a bit more of the same material used to make the limbs and the "stem" on top, plus felt of various colors for the other elements, stuffed with poly-fill. There's a velcro-closed opening on the back to get at the innards, since it also contains an electronic voice module. I finished assembling a mostly-preassembled PM66 voice module, broke open the game bundle of the iPad game to extract the sounds he makes during game play, and programmed the module with them. There are 4 switches, one in each limb, to trigger the sounds. A little...
