Up until my late 20's, all of my trips were at all-inclusive resorts. In my 30's, I noticed my travel habits started to change and I wanted to start exploring other countries instead of being stuck in a resort for 7 days. I decided this trip was going to be my last trip in an all-inclusive resort and I wanted to make the most of it. My friend and I chose Riviera Maya as a great place to spend 7 days on a beach. We chose the Rui Palace Resort for several reasons. the resort had great reviews on TripAdvisor, the resort looked beautiful in pictures, it was a 7 minute cab ride to Playa del Carmen and we got a great deal on the hotel. All the passengers on the bus were staying at different resorts which made it for a very long ride to our resort. If we took a cab straight there, it would have been a 40 minute ride but because the bus stopped at other resorts and of course we were the last stop, it took approx. We arrived at the resort at around 11pm and checked in. We immediately noticed that all the lights were off in the foyer and there was nobody around. Our initial thought was there was a power outage but after inquiring with one of the resort staff, they said the hotel shuts down at 11pm. My first reaction was "did we book a resort catered to senior citizens. Since all the restaurants and bars were closed for the evening, we decided to walk around the resort for a bit before we headed to our room. As we were walking, we noticed one place opened that offered late night snacks and food from a vending machine. Since the food in the vending machine looked a little questionable, we grabbed some chips and cookies from the bar, watched other people play pool and darts for a bit and then headed outside to the front lobby. We enjoyed the quietness for a bit, ate our snacks and turned in for the night. Once we entered our room, they left us towels on the bed, made into a swan and elephant. The room was very clean and spacious with a mini living room area. The next morning we put on our bikinis, grabbed our beach towels and headed for breakfast and then straight to the beach. It was a cloudy day but that didn't stop us from spending the day at the beach. One thing we learned about the Mexican sun is that it can be very deceiving. I looked like a lobster and my feet were so burnt that they started to swell. Lesson learned. In the evening we went for dinner in one of the resort restaurants and then headed to Playa del Carmen once the resort shut down at 11pm and everyone disappeared to their rooms. It was a very weird feeling not seeing anyone after 11pm. I felt like it was the end of days and my friend and were the only ones left on earth. Our saving grace was that the nightlife was in Playa del Carmen. Apparently, this resort is known for a peaceful and quiet atmosphere - tourists would pay extra for that. After our second night there, we started to appreciate the quietness and actually preferred it. Getting to Playa del Carmen was a 7 minute taxi ride and the cost was only $15. The resort strongly recommended we have the staff call a taxi and not... Riviera Maya had a bad reputation with taxi drivers gouging and scamming tourists so in order to protect the tourists and protect their tourism reputation, resorts only deal with reputable taxi companies. In heavily touristed areas, the police set up "taxi stops" and tourists were only allowed to use taxis from those stops. The nightlife in Playa del Carmen was very vibrant. It was packed with tourists and some locals, looking to have a good time and to party. The one thing I loved about the clubs and bars in Playa del Carmen was that woman drank for free and there was no cover charge. For the cabaret clubs that charged cover, there was a higher cover charge for tourists and a lower cover charge for locals. I found that odd and a little offensive but just like everywhere else in the world, there are always tourist traps. I normally avoid tourist traps but sometimes it's nice to be in the popular areas. On the strip where all the clubs were and the most heavily population of tourists, there were a lot of police patrolling the area with machine guns strapped to them. We felt a little scared thinking that it was an unsafe area but at the same time we felt very safe. Source: TravelPod.com TravelStream™ — Recent Entries at TravelPod.com
