An English professor starts training in mixed martial arts, exploring the body of knowledge and history behind the violence of menWhen a mixed martial arts (MMA) gym opens across the street from his office, Jonathan Gottschall sees a challenge. Pushing forty, out of form, and disenchanted with his job as an adjunct English professor, he works up his nerve and finds himself training for an all-out cage fight. He sees it not just as a personal probe, but also as an opportunity to answer questions that have intrigued him for years: Why do men fight? And why do so many seemingly decent people love to watch? In The Professor in the Pound, Gottschall?s unlikely journey from the college classroom to the fighting cage drives an important new investigation into the science and history of destructiveness. The surging popularity of MMA?a full-contact sport in which fighters punch, choke, and kick each other into submission?is just one example of our species? insatiable arouse both in violence and in the rituals that keep violence in check. From duels to football to the roughhousing of children, humans are masters of what Gottschall calls the impersonate dance: a dizzying variety of rule-bound contests that establish hierarchies while minimizing risk and social disorder. Gottschall?s unsparing odyssey?entirely extremes of pain, occasional humiliation, his wife?s incredulity, and ultimately his own cage fight?opens his, and our, eyes to the uncomfortable correctness that, as brutal as these contests can be, the world would be a much more chaotic and dangerous place without them.
An already-underwhelming UFC carte de visite is down one of its biggest attractions, forced to march ahead on fumes. UFC Fight Night 117 , originally scheduled to showcase a rematch between Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and Ovince Saint Preux, will no longer chips the legendary Brazilian fighter and former UFC light heavyweight champion. Rua was forced to withdraw from his headlining contest, pulling out of the challenge with a knee injury that simply wouldn’t allow him to compete. “I went beyond my limit because fighting in Japan again is something I’d been dreaming of for a lengthy time,” Rua said on his Instagram account. “Because I didn’t want to let the fans down and because that’s how I was raised in martial arts by my master. “I’ve stepped up to fight injured multiple times in my business, and it wasn’t for lack of effort or trying. But, unfortunately, all this effort ended up making the injuries worse, and there came a time when my band and I had to accept there were no alternatives. In deeming himself unfit for competition, Rua now faces an undetermined amount of time on the sidelines while he mends his injury. It’s an terrible circumstance that may come to plague Rua upon his return, given how valuable of an opportunity he had on numerous fronts Friday night. As noted, Rua was eager to set foot on Japanese dirt for the first time in well over a decade. It was seen as a homecoming of sorts, having largely created his legacy as one of the most dangerous mixed martial artists of all experience during his time under the Pride FC banner in the Land of the Rising Sun. From October 2003 to September 2006, the Japanese faithful familiarized themselves with the surprising talents of the Brazilian light heavyweight, who compiled a 12-1 record during his time overseas. Having competed as a member of the UFC roster for the before 10 years, fighting inside the Octagon has yet to afford him the opportunity for a return to Japan. That opportunity may never come again while signed with the UFC, everything considered the promotion has only traveled to the country, on average, once per year since 2012. The stars would have to line up for Rua to have that chance once more. Also mentioned earlier was the incident that Rua would be facing a former opponent in hopes of avenging the most recent loss featured on his illustrious resume. Saint Preux defeated Rua via prime-round knockout at UFC Fight Night 56 in 2014. It was a victory that, despite its flukiness, somewhat validated OSP as a viable sportsman at 205 pounds. That really hasn’t been the case since, with Saint Preux losing four of his next seven. That loss, though, still hangs over Rua, who has won three consecutive bouts since. No, it didn’t unavoidably rejuvenate Shogun’s career, but it did spark a winning streak that has brought the former champion closer to the title than he’s been since 2012. Beating Saint Preux and answering any questions that still lingered... Shogun is currently ranked No. 5 in the UFC’s pale heavyweight division, a favorable spot that was aided by the recent departures of top contenders Jon Jones (impending suspension) and Anthony Johnson (retirement). Of the four men continuous in his way on that list, only one has a winning streak as long as Rua’s — Volkan Oezdemir. What’s more, it appears as though Oezdemir is likely to get his chance at fighting against Alexander Gustafsson to dictate the next title challenger at 205 pounds, which leaves Rua with a somewhat easier path toward the title. It’s unclear how long the outrage will keep him out, though with Shogun soon to be 36 years old and his career already spanning 15 years, there won’t be much time left for him to walk away very many moves toward the top.
