I am in Sri Lanka, and have started a two-week Ayurveda treatment course. According to the handbook we received, Ayurveda is a traditional healing system that originated in India over 5,000 years ago. In Ayurvedic philosophy, the body is comprised of three life energies, or doshas: vatha, pitta and kapha. When the three doshas are out of balance, diseases occur. Ayurvedic treatments seek to prevent and heal diseases, strengthen the immune system, increase the body's well-being and vitality, and delay the aging process. The treatment center is in a resort on the southern shore of Sri Lanka, a very pretty, lush jungle setting, with a constant ocean roar in the background, sounds of birds and monkeys, and the smell of frangipani and incense everywhere. The setting is truly paradise, but the treatments are very organized and very much on a schedule, more New York-like. We are certainly kept busy, although there is enough flexibility to go on outings to nearby towns and temples later on. A typical day thus far consists of getting up after sunrise, taking the first half of an herbal elixir - to clean the kidneys -... Mostly fresh tropical fruits, such as passion fruit, papaya, jackfruit, custard apple and guava. This is followed by an herbal powder to clean blood and intestinal tract, which I have to mix with honey, and repeat twice during the day. I then don myself in a green sarong and get ready for a morning of acupuncture, eye drops, synchronized total body massages and a relaxation in the herbal garden while covered with herbal poultices. After that I get cleaned off in the shower, and immersed in a herbal bath. All this is done by a group of very friendly women in uniform who speak only rudimentary English, and I no Singalese, so often no 10 words are spoken all morning. Lunch for me is limited, as I have indicated to want a salt-free as well as a weight loss diet. Mistake, as I am now not allowed to eat from the truly delicious vegetarian buffet, and they don't let me cheat either. Everyone has a card with the specifics of each meal, incl. which juice and which soup you get, and this is different for everyone. Upon arrival we had a consultation with the Ayurvedic doctor, who did a thorough history and physical, incl. So in the afternoon there are different yoga classes every day, tai chi once a week, meditation, a nutrition class, and lectures and movies. And afternoon tea, of course. They discourage internet and smartphone use, but they do have a library for public use. By then it is dark and the day is usually over.
