However, Michael LaPointe, head instructor at United Martial Arts Academy of Rocky Mount in the Golden East Crossing mall, isn’t someone who will easily succumb to pain and adversity. LaPointe has a broken arm, which happened last month during a motorcycle accident. As he was doing a Toys for Tots run on his motorcycle, LaPointe said, he was hit in the back by a driver, who was texting while driving. However, this wasn’t the first major motorcycle accident LaPointe has been involved in. Years ago, he broke his back in six places, which left him unable to walk for a couple years, LaPointe said. Nonetheless, the broken arm hasn’t stopped LaPointe from teaching martial arts classes to around 30 children ages 4 to 12 and a few adults engaging in cardio kickboxing, rhythm rumble and self-defense training. “I feel it kind of shows the kids there really is little excuse they can come up with when they come here and train,” said LaPointe, who doesn’t wear a sling when teaching classes. LaPointe, who is a second-degree black belt with 34 years of karate experience, said he uses his karate classes as learning experiences for his young students. He said martial arts also helps people lose weight, build muscle and increase their self-confidence. “Sometimes the kids don’t like it when I have them doing things like push-ups and sit-ups,” LaPointe said. Before settling into his current role, LaPointe overcame some heartache in his life. When he was younger, LaPointe had a rough time dealing with the divorce of his parents, which led him down the wrong path of using drugs, getting involved in gang activity and eventually being sentenced to four years in prison when he was 18.... But as he was looking for another location for his tattoo shop, LaPointe said, he believed God was pushing him in a different direction. Since he grew up in Japan and across the world because his father was in the military, karate always had been part of LaPointe’s life, and he knew with the mistakes he made in his life it was important to help prevent children from going down the... As he was waiting on a friend one day to buy some shoes for her child in the mall, LaPointe noticed a large available space near JCPenney. He also was looking at other mall vacant spaces, which prompted a woman from Golden East Crossing’s management to gauge his level of interest in the open spaces. LaPointe mentioned to her his idea of starting a karate school mostly for children, which she found intriguing, he said. Later, after telling the idea to a couple LaPointe had a history of tattooing, they decided to help LaPointe start the karate school. “I really don’t want to give their names out, but it was just a blessing by them to help because I knew the rent was more than I could afford,” LaPointe said. In the works at United Martial Arts Academy, LaPointe said, is an after-school program he’s hoping to start next school year. LaPointe said he’s awaiting approval of a grant from Down East Partnership for Children before he can proceed with the after-school program. “Karate got to a point for me where I made it a bigger priority than going and doing well in school,” he said. “I dropped out, and I want these kids to understand how important it is to take their education seriously. I want them to understand the values they learn from karate are going to be reflected in school. Source: www.rockymounttelegram.com
